Guide to routine dental care

Everyone knows that routine dental care is important. But not everyone knows exactly what to do in order to make sure that they are indeed getting the regular dental care they need to support their good oral health.

Every day dental care.

  • Everyone should gently brush their teeth at least twice a day for about two minutes. Be sure to wait at least 30 minutes after eating before brushing, especially after eating any acidic foods, like oranges.
  • Everyone should floss their teeth once or twice a day to remove any food particles that can cause bacteria to grow.
  • Everyone should clean their tongue a few times a week. This can easily be done with a toothbrush or a tongue scraper.

Dental care every six months.

  • Everyone should see a dentist every *six months for a professional dental examination. This should include an oral evaluation, X-rays and a thorough tooth cleaning. It may include the dentist applying a fluoride solution to help prevent tooth decay and/or a sealant to help prevent cavities.

*Sometimes a dentist will agree to see a patient once a year if their oral health is at 100%. Sometimes a dentist will need to see a patient every three months if they need to improve their oral health.

  • This is a great time to ask the dentist any and all questions regarding good oral care.
