Crown Placement on Implants: Same Day Treatment Options

Crown placement cosmetic dentist St George, UT

If you need a dental implant, you likely have some concern about crown placement. In the past, you had to schedule two office visits to get a crown. During the first visit, the dentist placed the implant, took an impression and provided a temporary crown. The permanent crown was placed during the second visit. Now, you can get a same-day crown placement with Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC®).

How does same-day crown placement work?

Before choosing a same-day crown, patients should gain a better understanding of the procedure. This will help them determine if they want to move forward with a CEREC restoration.

How are crowns made?

Traditional crowns are made in dental laboratories. That is why it takes as much as two weeks to get the crowns back. CEREC allows dentists to make crowns in their offices.

The dentist takes impressions of the mouth with CAD/CAM technology. The dentist uses a computer to design the crown and then sends it to a 3-D milling machine. The machine uses a ceramic block to create the crown. It only takes the machine a few minutes to carve the ceramic into a dental crown.

Are CEREC crowns the same as traditional crowns?

CEREC crowns are only available in ceramic, while traditional crowns are available in various materials, including reinforced porcelain. Reinforced porcelain is much stronger than regular porcelain, so CEREC crowns are not as durable as some traditional crowns. Also, traditional crowns can match the teeth closer than CEREC crowns can. Traditional crowns are made by a person in the lab. The lab tech is skilled at matching the natural color of the teeth.

Still, dentists can provide a close color match using the CEREC process. The color might not match as well when compared to traditional crowns, but CEREC crowns still do a nice job of blending in with the natural teeth.

Benefits of CEREC

While same-day crowns are not as strong as traditional crowns, they offer some benefits. First, people do not have to make a second dental appointment when getting same-day crowns. This saves time and money, and it also means people do not have to worry about temporary crowns falling out in between visits.

It is possible to lose a temporary crown and that leaves the nerves exposed. Caring for a temporary crown can be difficult, so this is a relief to many patients. CEREC adhesive is also quite strong, so it secures the crown in place nicely. This reduces the chance of infection after placement. Also, many people report that same-day crowns feel more like natural teeth because of the materials used. This can create a more comfortable fit.

Are you a good candidate for CEREC?

Your dentist needs to examine you to see if you are a good option for same-day crown placement when you get an implant. After an examination, your dentist will go over your options with you. If you are a good candidate, you can begin the process and enjoy the benefits.
