CEREC® dental crowns are an innovation in same-day dentistry that allows patients to complete their dental restoration within a single day. With this technology, patients no longer have to endure the long waiting periods often associated with regular dental crowns. In one dental appointment, the dentist can restore the appearance of your smile.
What are CEREC dental crowns?
A cosmetic dentist can suggest getting a dental crown for different reasons, most commonly if the patient has a damaged tooth that needs protection. Patients who have older dental crowns that need replacement may consider CEREC dental crowns as well. Although most patients are eligible for this type of crown, the specific conditions for eligibility often depend on the purpose of the crowns, as well as other factors.
When dental crowns are used
Dental crowns are one option for restoring the structural integrity of damaged teeth while also offering a solution that blends in perfectly with the remaining healthy teeth. Preserving a natural tooth, no matter the defect, is important because of the root structure. If the tooth’s root can be saved, then it is possible to prevent extraction, which can disrupt the jawbone as well as the existing teeth.
With dental crowns, a cosmetic dentist can resolve many impairments to a tooth while simultaneously protecting it from further damages. The crown functions and looks like the natural tooth, allowing patients to smile, talk and eat confidently. The following are some of the problems that can be corrected with CEREC dental crowns:
- Advanced tooth decay
- Chipped teeth
- Discolored teeth
- Worn teeth
- Cracked teeth
- A tooth that has been filled too many times
Many of these issues can be resolved with same-day restoration instead of removing the tooth completely. You may also be eligible for CEREC dental crowns if you have recently undergone root canal treatment.
How the treatment works
With regular dental crowns, the dentist takes impressions of the patient’s teeth and forwards them to a dental lab to fabricate the crown. The patient returns to the office after some time for crown placement, during which the dentist performs any required adjustments to make the crown fit.
However, with CEREC technology, dentists can totally avoid dental labs because the crown is created in the office. The system uses computer-aided design to produce a perfect dental crown for the patient. First, the system takes 3D images of the patient’s mouth and transmits the images to a milling machine through computer software. The milling machine creates a new tooth from ceramic right in the dental office. The new crown has the same durability as any crown and, with proper maintenance, can last between 10 to 15 years.
Final note
If you have a big day coming up and you want to quickly correct imperfections in your smile, CEREC dental crowns are likely your best bet. The technology is available to virtually every patient who wants a beautiful smile without having to wait for weeks to get a regular crown.
