If you are missing a majority of your natural teeth, it is time to consider getting dentures. These prosthetics are the most affordable way to replace missing teeth. There are other alternatives like implants and bridges to replace missing teeth, but using either to replace all of a person's missing teeth can be quite pricey.
For example, the cost of getting a single implant can be higher than the cost of replacing all of a person's natural teeth with traditional dentures.
When is it Appropriate to Get Dentures?
It should be noted that taking proper care of teeth can allow one to keep his or her natural teeth for an entire lifetime. This care includes brushing at least twice a day with a quality toothpaste, flossing daily, and using an antibacterial mouthwash to control oral bacteria.
However, not everyone takes proper care of their teeth, and this eventually leads to tooth decay and gum disease. Either one of these is enough to make people lose all of their natural teeth over time. Once that happens, simple tasks like talking and eating become very difficult.
Common signs that indicate a person needs dentures:
- Persistent toothaches which are a sign that the decay has reached the pulp chamber
- Inflammation of the gums which is a symptom of gum disease
- Loose teeth – a sign of deteriorating jawbone tissue
- Missing most of his/her natural teeth
- Difficulty chewing – which often leads to digestive issues
Different Types of Dentures
1. Traditional Dentures
These are the most affordable and most commonly used type of dentures. These devices are removable, and they are kept in place with adhesives and suction. This type of prosthetics consists of two parts: a base that holds the device in place and the artificial teeth that are known as pontics.
Traditional dentures should be removed before the wearer goes to bed, and there are strict maintenance guidelines that must be followed.
2. Partial Dentures
Partial dentures are removable like traditional ones, but these are designed to replace a few missing teeth instead of a full set. The devices are attached to the patient's natural teeth using precision attachments like clasps. Partial dentures are virtually undetectable when inside the wearer's mouth.
3. Implant Supported Dentures
Implanted supported dentures are the best option as far as these types of prosthetics are concerned. It provides the many benefits associated with implants while giving patients a more affordable way to replace all or most of their natural teeth.
This procedure consists of having four to six dental implants surgically inserted into the patient's mouth. Once the implants have fused with the person's jawbone, special dentures are permanently attached to the implants. Unlike regular dentures that continuously shift and have to be removed daily, implant supported dentures are a permanent solution. Taking care of them is no different from taking care of natural teeth.
