Can You Permanently Attach Dental Dentures?

Why do you need permanent dental dentures?

If you experience tooth extraction or tooth loss, you probably want your dentures fixed as fast as possible. Permanent attachment of dental dentures refers to treatment that lasts longer than traditional dentures.

In the past, people with missing teeth had the limited options of false teeth (dentures) or bare gums. Although both provide denture replacement, they have disadvantages such as collapsed face, eating difficulty, physical changes, unnatural look and limited taste sense, uncomfortable feeling and many more.

Dental implants, a permanent solution

Dental implants, as a modern alternative of the dentures, have countered most of the problems of conventional denture techniques. It has emerged as a permanent solution to missing teeth.

An implant-supported denture is not only a modern technique to get dental dentures permanently attached, but it also is superior to false teeth or conventional dentures.

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a denture attached to and supported by implants. Unlike regular dentures, it not only fixes itself on the gums, but it also comes with a special attachment to snap onto the implants. These modern implants are designed for both upper and lower jaws and do not need any extra support.

How do dental implants work?

There are two kinds of implant-supported dentures:

  1. Bell-retained dentures
  2. Bar-retained dentures

Both dental dentures are created with an acrylic base (for gums), and porcelain teeth are attached to their base. The dental implant is usually attached to the lower jawbone of the mouth because of the higher bone density compared to the upper jawbone. Depending on preference, the implants can be removable or permanently attached to the crown.

Permanent dental denture includes two surgeries for stable placement. The process takes at least five to 12 months, especially if preliminary procedures like bone grafting are required.

Benefits of dental implants as a permanent attachment

This modern alternative has a slew of benefits and is superior to conventional dentures for many reasons:

  • It re-establishes slip support to minimize a wrinkled appearance and removes marionette lines
  • It preserves the jawbone and reforms facial structure
  • Unlike ill-fitting dentures, it causes no pain
  • It does not include any dangerous adhesives
  • It increases stability and restores the natural capacity of chewing
  • It maintains mouth activity and improves taste sense
  • It allows patients to eat and drink anything they want

Bottom line

There is no denying that dental implants are the best solution to your missing teeth and can be attached permanently. However, they need replacement and dental visits from time to time. Make sure to discuss your preferences with your dentist for a more satisfactory outcome.
